Julia Groves Martin

Julia Groves Martin (Mrs. Robert Vincent Martin, Jr.), age 95, died peacefully March 2, 2016. Mrs. Martin was born August 17, 1920 in Savannah, Georgia to Robert Walker Groves and Evelyn Ragland Groves.  She attended Pape School in Savannah, St. Timothy's School in Maryland and graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia.  Because of her affinity for languages, Mrs. Martin worked with the Army Signal Corps in Washington, D.C. where she was instrumental in deciphering codes during World War II.

Mrs. Martin was pre-deceased by her husband, Robert Vincent Martin, Jr., after 58 wonderful years of marriage and her brother, Robert Walker Groves, Jr.  In addition to being a devoted mother, Mrs. Martin found time to serve her community in many ways.  Her involvements included membership in The Junior League of Savannah, The Savannah Girl Scout Council, The Women's Board of Bethesda, and The Altar Guild of Christ Church.  In addition, Mrs. Martin served as President of The National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia from 1961-1967.  She served as National President of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America from 1976-1980.  She was also President of the Board of Directresses of Telfair Hospital.  Mrs. Martin was a communicant of St. John's Church in Savannah.

Mrs. Martin, affectionately known as "Gogga" by her family, loved playing card games especially Bridge in which she excelled, solving puzzles, and making her famous cheese straws.  These activities were shared with generations of her family.  Christmas Eve gatherings were always special because of her recitation of "Twas The Night Before Christmas," with grandchildren and great-grandchildren seated on the floor surrounding her.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her children, Evelyn Turner (John), Vincent Martin (Elaine), Julia Train (Robert), Catherine Cooper (Chuck) and Walker Martin (Melody).  In addition, she is survived by twelve grandchildren, Catherine Turner Edwards (Frank), John Turner (Katherine), Robert Turner (Kelly), Rob Martin (Amy), Elizabeth Martin Richards (Chris), Mary Jane Martin, William Train (Arianne), Julia Train, Anne Cooper, Caroline Cooper, Catherine Cooper and Kelly Gail Martin. Also surviving her are six step-grandchildren, Trip Train (Tonya), Sissy Train Speirs, Stephanie Train, Chuck Cooper (Carrie), Chad DuBose, Candice DuBose and twelve great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Martin is survived by two sisters-in-law, Caroline Martin Lane and Cornelia Rankin Groves.

The family wishes to thank Mrs. Martin's caregivers for their devotion to her well-being.

The funeral service will be at 11:00am on Saturday at St. John's Church, 1 West Macon Street.  Memorials may be sent to St. John's Church, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America or a charity of your choice.
